What are the USA Green Card rules?

Hi! I've heard about the green card lottery. Is this difficult to get one? I have a British citizenship and I know that UK is currently ineligible to give out green cards. Does this mean that I have absolutely no chance for getting one? I'm going to be quite highly educated and become a teacher which is a job in high demand in USA. If I will meet the requirements, will I get a green card easily or not? I really dream of living in US. Thank you.
And what do you mean by being "sponsored by an employer"?

A school district can apply for you through the H1-B program. The pinch is that there is a very limited supply of H1-B visa available each year and it is hard for most school districts that only need one or two to compete with companies that apply for several visas at once.

Once you get here as an H1-B. They can also petition for you to obtain your residency through employment. As long as you are of good moral character it should not be too difficult to get your residency after the obstacle of the initial visa is overcome. You need to make sure that your prosective employer is willing to petition you for residency though. Otherwise when they quit applying for extension of stay you will have to return to England. I think you can only be an H1-B for six years at a time.
